I do still wish it had Linux support, which is something I believe only newer Chromebooks have. I have an original Pixel that I got refurbed, dirt cheap. I put GalliumOS on it, which is pretty easy and has all the drivers for the hardware. So, I can install anything on it like my old laptop.
I use an SD card for storage. I tried a couple other Linux distros but all had problems or needed fiddling to get everything working. I installed CloudReady on my Pixel a year ago and it runs quite well keyboard light and bluetooth sound is shaky. It works fine. And the only difference is that I have the blueish Chromium icon instead of the red, yellow, green and blue Chrome icon.
Was it necessary to remove the write protection screw before installing the cloudready system via a usb drive, Was it a complicated process? Any observations would be helpful. Being frustrated with that, I have tried various other like, Elementary, Zorin, Mint, Elive and others with the same result.
Many times with just a dummy output listed in audio setting. From all my research this seems to be the case for many and again with no luck on finding a permanent fix. Very frustrating as it is a very usable laptop still and seems pretty zippy and responsive to all OS I have tried. Then again may just be the idiot newbie behind the keyboard that is the problem all along. The no-brainer alternative is to keep going with the unsupported Chromebook but set up a new Google account for it, using the machine only for non-personal things.
You can fwd your personal gmail to the new account so you can read it, if you like. I volunteer for a nonprofit organization and we received a couple of Samsung Chromebooks as a donation earlier this year. Since our main use for them is financial communication with banks and donors by our treasurer and accountant we were astonished to realize that in about 18 months they would pose a security risk if we keep using them for that.
Now I understand why our neighborhood pawnshop has a sign that says they do not accept used Chromebooks for sale. You say that you have 18 months before the Chromebook hits AUE. During that time there is a good chance that LaCrOS will be released which could very well provide secure browsing past the expiry date. Yes, you can. I have two Chromebooks, one newer than the other. Can I use the Recovery Utility that is intended for the newer one on the older one — and will doing so fool whatever online entity decides whether a machine is entitled to new updates?
Or is that decision based on hardware instead of software? Recovery images are specific to devices. Might be worth looking into CloudReady for the older device. I bought a Toshiba Chromebook in What a waste of money. And, so much for green technology. How many of these things are already in a landfill? To think that I still use it today and it is still productive is amazing value for money considering how much I paid for it.
